• What Spiders Really Do For Websites

Have you ever wondered What Spiders Do For Websites? We have, and so we went looking for answers. Here is what we found that explains What Spiders Really Do For Websites, the role of the search engine spiders and why backlinks are so important.

We all use search engines to find information on the Internet, we type in a word or phrase and they give us a list of results. Imagine with millions of websites online what a daunting task it is to index all these sites and provide instantaneous search results. How do they do it?

Since Google is #1, we looked at how they index and compile web content. Google uses a program that crawls, like a spider, through the World Wide Web to find and compile new content. They call it the Googlebot. There are two types of Googlebots, one that looks for new content and one that follows the links on your web pages. It is not just Google; In fact, all the major search engines have spider programs, sometimes called web crawlers or web spiders, to look for and compile content.

In order for your web pages to show up when someone does a search, you need to make sure the web spiders have crawled your website. For that to happen, you can manually submit your site to the various search engines and add a sitemap of your web pages to your website.  However, the best way to attract spiders is to get links from other websites to your website, called backlinks. Websites without backlinks are standing alone, the spiders  may not find you, so your website will rarely appear in search results. That’s not want you want. You want people to find your website, and find it often.

    What is a Backlink?

A backlink is achieved when another website links to your website. A reciprocal link is when you both link to each others websites. Getting backlinks is a very important component of marketing your website on the Internet, for it allows the spiders to find your website or web pages, and give them a ranking.  When a link to your website is placed on a web page with a high page rank, your website is considered more important by the spiders. If your website does not get backlinks from other websites, your website could be ignored by the spiders. Your website would simply be out of their reach.

Here is a way to Get Backlinks quickly.

Why is Page Rank so Important?

Every web page of every website on the Internet is assigned a PageRank in Google from 0 to 10, with 0 being the least important, and 10 being the most. All new website starts at 0.

The Googlebot crawls websites with the highest ranking (10) first and works its way down towards websites ranked 0. As a result, web pages with PageRank 10 get enormous attention, the spider may visit it many, many times in an hour. On the other hand, PageRank 0 sites might not get any attention at all.

    How Spiders Work

The spiders read through a page, starting from the top left and ending at the bottom right. When they encounter a link, they will follow that link and start reading there. So you want the spider to follow a link from someone’s website to your website. It doesn’t help you if you place an outbound link from your website to someone else’s website – the link must come from their website back to yours.

The more backlinks to your website, the more spiders see it, and the higher your PageRank. It is important to remember, a webpage that has a high PageRank throws out a higher vote for your web pages than those with low PageRank. If you can get high ranking pages to link to you, you earn their strong votes, significantly elevating your webpage’s PageRank position. At the same time, do not link out to websites, because you bleed away your PageRank in doing so. In short, get backlinks from high PageRank webpages, and give few if any outgoing links.

PageRank 10 is very difficult to reach. Possibly the only website with a PageRank 10 is Google’s homepage. Wikipedia has PageRank 8. Some of the biggest players on the Internet like Microsoft and Apple Computers rank 9. Many important websites have PageRanks between 4 and 6 – a level you can and should reach.

There are free tools on the Internet to find a website or web page PageRank, or you can download Firefox’s SEO tool.
