3 Secrets to Search Engine Optimization

The three major search engines, Google, Yahoo! and MSN, look for three main criteria in ranking the importance of your website. Even more important than these three items discussed below, you must remember search engines want to keep their customers using their search. They do that by supplying their customers with the most relevant answers to their search queries.

Everyone knows that getting traffic to your website is the most important element to obtaining success online. Without traffic you might as well put up a billboard in the desert. No one is going to see it. So how do you get the coveted traffic desired by all website owners and get the search engines to rank your site as relevant?

Here are the main items used in the rankings.

Relevant Content

Content is number one in building traffic, but not just any content. Your website’s content must be relevant to the theme of your website. In other words, don’t put information about food and great recipes on your website if your website’s theme is based on how to make money online. The search engines will take that as irrelevant content and rate the website accordingly.

If you have a great deal of content that is relevant to your theme and just add one or two of your grandmas favorite recipes once you have a following, that is OK. Which leads to the next key to getting a high ranking, the amount of relevant content.

The Amount of Information

The amount of relevant information is just as critical as the relevance of the information itself for the search engines. For example, if you have a website about how to keep pets healthy, but you only have one relevant article and 50 links to pet affiliate sites, your site will be ranked poorly.

The search engines want to see a great deal of relevant content that will satisfy a web surfer’s search for how to keep their pets healthy. Links to other sites are not considered relevant content, especially if they are affiliate marketing sites that you are hoping to make money from.

Back Links

Once you have created a good deal of original, relevant content on your website then you are ready to go after the holy grail, back links. What is a back link? A back link is a link from another site to your site.

Links to your site show the search engines your website is relevant to another website. But be careful when going after back links. Relevance is still key. The website linking to yours must also have relevance to your website’s theme in order to help your website’s ranking with the search engines.

What is the best way to get back links? Writing articles and Press Releases. Then distributing those articles through a variety of free article distribution sites.
